Description of the excursion
We left Esquel early to explore what was once the caldera of a volcano that erupted 50 million years ago.
As we advance through the steppe, we make stops to recognize the bird and plant species that have adapted to these extreme living conditions. We also gain panoramic views of the mountain range we are leaving behind. We leave the paved road and continue along a dusty gravel road that leads us to the Chubut River valley, which appears like an oasis amidst such aridity. We enter the Piedra Parada area (a Protected Natural Area of the province). Today, in addition to its impressive landscapes, it is a mecca for climbers from around the world. The site is rich in landscape photography, birdwatching, and recognition of the characteristic flora of this transition zone between the steppe and the mountain. We hike through the Piedra Parada area and then enter the deep La Buitrera canyon, where we explore its interior on an approximately 8-km hike that always holds surprises. Here, we can observe the chinchilla scurrying on almost vertical walls.
On the way back, after a snack, we'll stop in Gualjaina, a small town with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants. We return to Esquel at dusk, as the sun sets behind the mountain range.
